What are EMFs and Why Should We Care?

Electromagnetic fields (EMFs) are invisible areas of energy produced by electricity and wireless technology. They're all around us—from power lines and household wiring to Wi-Fi routers, cell phones, Bluetooth devices, and smart home technology.

Not all EMFs are the same. They generally fall into two categories:

  • Low-frequency EMFs, produced by electrical wiring, appliances, and power lines.
  • Radiofrequency (RF) EMFs, emitted by wireless devices like cell phones, Wi-Fi, and Bluetooth.

So, should we be concerned?

The scientific community continues to study the long-term health effects of EMF exposure, but increasing documentation is coming out showing harmful effects of EMF on human health.

I bring my EMF meter to every showing, and I often recommend professional EMF testing during Escrow.

Whether or not you're concerned, reducing unnecessary exposure is often simple and inexpensive. Small steps—such as keeping Wi-Fi routers away from bedrooms, using speakerphone or wired headphones during long calls, and turning off wireless devices when they're not needed—can help reduce your overall exposure without disrupting daily life.

At the end of the day, EMFs are just one piece of the healthy home puzzle. Alongside clean air, good ventilation, moisture control, low-toxicity building materials, and clean water, understanding your home's environment can help you make informed choices for your family's well-being!
